First Years are Munster A champions!!
St. Mary’s Charleville Camogie Update
First Years are Munster A champions!!
Last Wednesday St. Mary’s Charleville first years emerged victorious from the Munster A Blitz. The standard on the day was very high with 7 schools battling it out in the A grade. The Charleville girls played their hearts out and made it a 4 in a row for the school.
The teams were split into two groups. In Group 1 Ursulines Thurles came first with Tulla in second and Ballincollig unlucky to be knocked out. St. Marys were in group 2. In the first game Charleville played Pres Thurles. Even though Thurles were at home and Charleville had made the journey, the girls in sky blue made a determined start and won 1:5 to 0:0. Emma Meade was rarely troubled in goal as the backs in front of her were in excellent form. Captain Ciara Sheehy and teak tough defender Lauren Biggane cleared anything that came their way. Laura Doyle playing at wing forward was flying and scored four excellent points from all different distances. Jade Hooper was a real handful at full-forward and scored 1:1. Others to do well in the opening game were Marianne O Dwyer, Sophie Collins and Ava Hooper.
The second game was against our rivals St. Mary’s Nenagh. It was a great game where we ended up winning 2:3 to 2:0. Grainne O Leary and Eimear Hawe were really good in the half back line. Ursula Bluett, Kathleen O Reilly and Isabell Mortell were working hard around the middle of the pitch. Orla O Donnell was tireless at wing forward. Ciara O Brien opened the scoring with a great individual goal after being set up by Jade Hooper. Jade then scored a nice point from play just before halftime. Laura Doyle continued her great form in the second half with two points from play. Nenagh hit back with two goals that put Charleville on the back foot and luckily Jade Hooper replied with a superb goal after taking on the Nenagh defence and blasting the sliotar to the net. Others to play well in this game were Molly Ryan, Ava Hooper and Ciara Sheehy. Game three was a chance to give the entire panel a go as we knew we had qualified for the semis. Blarney played their full team and taught us a harsh lesson and won 3:3 to 0:0. There were some good displays by Sarah Barrett, Cliodhna O Neill, Sophie Collins and Eva Murphy but the girls knew they would have to upp their performance if they wanted to win out the blitz.
The semifinal was against Ursulines Thurles who earlier in the year beat our Juniors to take the Munster title. Time for a bit of revenge!. This was the most exciting game so far of the day with very little separating the sides. It ended up 1:3 to 1:2 in St. Mary’s favour. The team was re-arranged. Lauren Biggane stepped into goal and did very well. Jade Hooper went centre back and played a stormer of a game. Lucy Costelloe really came into her own and dominated centre-field. Laura Doyle was exceptional at wing forward. Grainne O Leary was the star of the semi final at corner forward with her energetic display. Grainne opened the scoring for Charleville with a fine point to reply to Nenagh’s cracking goal. Nenagh hit back with a point before Laura Doyle equalized with a great goal from play. Both teams scored early points in the second half with ours coming from Laura Doyle. With two minutes left Laura Doyle came to Charleville’s rescue with a great point that just crept over after great work by Eimear Hawe, Marianne O Dwyer and Kathleen O Reilly. Our defence held tough despite fierce pressure and Lauren Biggane, Ciara Sheehy, Isabell Costelloe, Eimear Hawe and Jade Hooper were all outstanding.
The final was against Blarney who earlier had beaten us by 12 points! Blarney have 4 Cork 14 players and are an excellent team. However Charleville rose to the occasion. Ciara O Brien had her best game of the day and got two great goals both being typical of her goal-poaching skills. Grainne O Leary also got a superb goal that was a real individual strike. Laura Doyle got a long range point. The final score was 3:1 to 1:3 in Marys favour. Ursula Bluett went wing back to curb Blarneys speedy dangerous forward and did a great job while Eimear Hawe did a huge amount of work in the midfield areas. Lucy Costelloe and Orla O Donnell were everywhere. Jade Hooper cleared ball after ball. Isabell Mortell was excellent in her new corner back position. All of the team produced great displays and fully deserved their win. A great achievement to win First Year Munster A title and Ciara Sheehy was the perfect captain.
The semifinal of the league is due to be played in the next few weeks so there is more to look forward to!
