The English Department at St Mary’s Secondary School encourages the academic, creative and emotional development of all students through a careful selection of appropriate texts.
The English Department offers a variety of opportunities for students to get involved in all aspects of the curriculum. At Junior Cycle, students are introduced to the world of literature and encouraged to express themselves freely through written, oral and visual platforms. The TY English programme is an excellent year in which students experience a unique programme that inspires confidence. Active learning is very much at the heart of what we do in terms of developing their understanding of texts, with many opportunities for discussion and performance. At Senior Cycle, students are provided the time to grow and flourish through meaningful engagement with complex and challenging themes. Our primary goal, as teachers of the subject, is to facilitate our students in discovering their own voice, and fostering in them a lifelong love for literature and the Arts.

Here are some photos to show what a typical year studying English looks like.
Shown above is Muireann and our production team recording the TY virtual musical using a green screen. On the right, you’ll see first years using their Chromebooks to write emails to their classmates in English class.
