St. Mary’s has been involved in Green Schools for nearly eight years now. During this time we have achieved 3 flags which we are very proud of.
- Litter & Waste.
We are currently working on achieving our 4th flag on “TRAVEL”. It will be a busy but rewarding year ahead!! Back in September our Green Schools Committee reconvened with renewed enthusiasm and welcomed our new first years to the committee.
The groups meets every Monday at lunch time to discuss up and coming events, to plan for our travel flag and to maintain previous flags. On a weekly basis jobs are given out and minutes of each meeting are recorded. Weekly jobs include: Shredding paper, filling up the bird feeders in the garden, monitoring litter levels, making sure lights are switched off, report leaking taps and toilets, and making sure the posters are clearly displayed around the school.
Our aim this year is achieve the travel flag through the 7 step process, with the help and guidance from Ellan Murphy from An Taisce.
‘’By promoting sustainable transport modes (walking, cycling, carpooling or public transport), the schools will also improve pupils’ safety, health and fitness. The journey to school is an ideal way for children to take part in regular physical activity, to interact with their peers, and to develop the road sense children need as pedestrians and cyclists.’’
Green Schools Ireland Back in October we undertook a walkability audit around Charleville. This involved three different routes around the town. Two were chosen as suitable, safe accessible routes for park and stride. This would be an fantastic initiative as it would reduce car congestion around the school gate and it would also promote a healthy lifestyle among the school community.
The results of the walkability audit will be sent to the County Council and we hope to have their support in the future and also have Slí na Sláinte signs in the area.
A day of action took place in the school in September. Students took part in a WOW Day whereby the walked to school. There will be several of these action days to create awareness throughout the year.
